Colin Smith + Judith Wilson Architects

A proto-type steel stair to replace a much repaired brick and concrete first floor access stair in a 1960's housing estate. At ground level, small private gardens constrained the layout. The stair was completely prefabricated and the galvanised finish applied off site as speed of erection was a critical consideration to maintain access.

Steel was chosen as the material for transparency as well as for off-site manufacture. Light passes through the balustrade and treads benefitting the ground floor properties.

The sub-division of the balusters, handrail and infill panels are very carefully designed to give proportion to each flight and the oak handrail adds the only tactile element of the design.
